The focus of the Discovery Zone is to link STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) with food, farming and the countryside in a hands-on and interactive way.
The Discovery Zone is our hub of interactive learning and entertainment for young people and families. This year, our core theme is the potato, a key Norfolk crop and staple food. We have a range of exciting activities on offer, with the main event being our Potato Trail, in which you can see how potatoes are grown, harvested and processed. Find out what a potato field looks like in each season, discover the scale of potato farming by seeing a harvester up close and finish off by creating your own chips!
There is plenty more on offer including the opportunity to find out how to create useful soil from waste, learn about blight resistant potatoes, extract DNA from bananas, find out how to improve starch content in plants, create your own potato prints and learn about school allotment projects in Norfolk and sustainability. There will be lots of opportunities to take part in fun hands-on activities in the Discovery Zone.
The organisations providing free activities in the Discovery Zone this year include SAW Trust, the Papillon Project and Morrisons, whilst The Forum, John Innes Centre, Quadram Institute, Norfolk and Norwich Science Association, Sainsbury Laboratory and the University of East Anglia’s Schools of Environmental Sciences and Pharmacy are providing free activities in this year’s science tent.
We are thankful for the support of the Norwich Science Festival and the Discovery Zone is a chance for you to learn more about this autumn’s Norwich Science Festival at The Forum, Norwich!
